Jacob S. “Jake” and Nellie B. (DeSautel) Welter Family

Jacob S. Welter (Jake) was born 21 Oct 18791-6 in Saukville, Ozaukee, Wisconsin.  He was the sixth child of Nicholas P. and Catherina (Stemper) Welter. According to the 1880 Census1 the family had moved from Wisconsin to Cass County, North Dakota, and by 18852 they were living in Acton Township, Walsh County, North Dakota, where the family finally settled.

Jake married Nellie B. DeSautel in about 1912 in Grafton, Walsh, North Dakota11.  Nellie was born in December of 1893 in Grafton9, the daughter of David and Selina (Robillard) DeSautel. The DeSautel family moved to Farmington Township prior to 1900 and settled there12.

Jake and Nellie stayed in Acton Township where Jake farmed, but by 193014 they were living in Grafton where Jake worked as an insurance agent.  In 1940 they were living in Larimore, Grand Forks, North Dakota where he worked as a carpenter building church buildings while Nellie work as a beauty salon operator15.  By 1946 they had moved to Napa, California. For eight years owned and operated the Senate Hotel, and for five years the Cozy Corner restaurant at First and Randolph streets. Jacob died on 11 Nov 1961 in Napa, California, at the age of 82. He is buried at Tulocay Cemetery in Napa.

  1. Winnifred M. Welter: Born abt 1914 in North Dakota6. Lived in Vallejo, Solano, California with her husband (surname Mamie) In 196112.
  1. Catherine G. Lucille Welter: Born abt 1918 in North Dakota6. Resided in Napa, Napa, California with husband (surname Ostrom) in 196112.
  1. Frank Merylen Welter: Born abt Jun 1919 in North Dakota6. Resided in Napa, Napa, California in 196112.
  1. Leona Welter, born abt 1921 in North Dakota6. Resided in Topeka, Shawnee, Kansas with her husband (surname Engbretsen) in 196112.
